OVS Solutions at Electra Mining Africa 2026: what we saw, heard, and learned

Electra Mining Africa is one of those events that reminds you why the work matters.

Over five days at Nasrec, the OVS Solutions team had hundreds of conversations with SHERQ professionals, health and safety managers, operations directors, engineers, contractors, and senior decision-makers from across the mining and industrial sectors. The energy on the floor was strong. The questions were pointed. And the themes that came up again and again told us something important about where health and safety management in South Africa is heading.

This is our honest reflection on the 2026 expo — what we demonstrated, what we heard, and what it means for organisations managing safety and compliance in an increasingly complex operational environment.

Eight years at Electra Mining — and this one felt different

OVS Solutions has been exhibiting at Electra Mining Africa for eight years. In that time, the conversations at our stand have shifted significantly. Eight years ago, the questions were mostly about what digital safety management software could do. This year, the questions were about how to do it — how to implement, how to integrate, how to get teams to use it, and how to demonstrate the value to leadership.

That shift reflects something real happening in the South African SHERQ landscape. Digitalisation is no longer a future concept for most of the organisations we spoke to. It is an active priority — and the gap between those who have made the transition and those still relying on paper-based processes is becoming visible in audit outcomes, incident rates, and regulatory scrutiny.

What we demonstrated at the stand

At Electra Mining 2026, we showcased the full Rapid Global platform — demonstrating how its different modules work together to give organisations a connected approach to SHERQ management rather than a collection of disconnected tools.

The solutions on show included Rapid Contractor for contractor compliance and management, Rapid Induct for digital contractor and employee inductions, Rapid Auditor for safety audit and inspection management, Rapid Incident for incident reporting and investigation, Rapid Permit for permit to work management, Rapid Access for integrated access control, and Rapid Aware — our AI-powered safety monitoring solution.

Each demonstration showed not just what the individual module does, but how the modules connect. A contractor who completes their induction on Rapid Induct has that completion linked directly to Rapid Access — so they can only enter site once all requirements are met. An incident logged in Rapid Incident triggers a corrective action that feeds into the audit record in Rapid Auditor. A permit issued through Rapid Permit is visible in real time to site management and expires automatically when the timeframe ends.

The demonstration that consistently generated the most interest was Rapid Aware — our AI-powered workplace safety monitoring solution. Rapid Aware uses computer vision to provide real-time safety insights, identifying issues such as missing PPE, mobile phone use, and proximity hazards while giving safety teams actionable information they can act on immediately rather than discovering the problem after an incident has occurred.

What visitors told us

The conversations at our stand this year were some of the most substantive we have had in eight years of exhibiting. People came with real problems — not theoretical questions — and wanted to understand specifically how technology could help solve them.

Three themes came up consistently across almost every conversation.

The paperwork problem

Virtually every organisation we spoke to is still managing some part of their SHERQ process on paper or in spreadsheets. The frustration is not that people do not know paper-based systems are inadequate — they know. The frustration is the practical challenge of making the transition without disrupting operations or overwhelming teams that are already stretched.

The conversations we had around this were among the most energising at the expo, because the Rapid platform is specifically designed to make that transition practical — starting with the areas of highest risk and expanding as the organisation builds confidence in the system.

The visibility gap

Organisations are managing operations across multiple sites with large contractor workforces — and they have no real-time view of what is happening. Who is on site right now? What is their compliance status? When were the last audits conducted and what were the findings? These are questions that should have instant answers and in most organisations they require someone to compile a report.

The demonstration of Rapid’s real-time compliance dashboard — showing contractor status, active permits, outstanding corrective actions, and recent incidents across all sites simultaneously — consistently stopped people at the stand for a second look.

The AI question

Artificial intelligence came up in more conversations at Electra Mining 2026 than in any previous year we have exhibited. The interest is genuine, but so is the scepticism. Visitors wanted to understand what AI actually does in a safety context — not the marketing version, but the practical version.

Rapid Aware gave us a concrete answer to that question. Real-time visual monitoring that identifies specific safety hazards. Alerts that give safety teams actionable information before an incident occurs. A shift from retrospective reporting to proactive identification. That is what AI means in the context of workplace health and safety software — and the response from visitors who saw it demonstrated was consistently strong.

The trends that came through clearly

Beyond the individual conversations, the aggregate of what we heard at Electra Mining 2026 painted a clear picture of where South African SHERQ management is heading.

Digitalisation is accelerating — not as a theoretical goal but as an operational imperative. Organisations that attended the expo are actively looking for platforms to replace manual processes, and the question has moved from “should we do this” to “how do we do this well.”

Integration is the priority — single-function tools are losing ground to platforms that connect multiple SHERQ functions in a unified system. The organisations that visited our stand were not looking for another system to manage alongside everything else. They were looking for a system that replaces everything else.

AI is becoming real — not as a replacement for safety professionals, but as a tool that gives them better information faster. The ability to monitor, detect, and alert in real time is something organisations are beginning to understand as genuinely achievable rather than aspirational.

Contractor management remains the biggest risk — across construction, mining, manufacturing, and logistics, the conversations about contractor compliance were the most urgent. The volume of contractors, the complexity of documentation requirements, and the liability exposure under the OHS Act mean this is where organisations feel the most pressure — and where digital systems deliver the most immediate value.

The conversations that continue after the expo

One of the things we say every year about Electra Mining Africa is that the value extends well beyond the five days of the event. The leads generated, the relationships strengthened, and the conversations started at the stand turn into follow-up meetings, product demonstrations, and new partnerships in the weeks and months that follow.

2026 was no different — and in some respects the pipeline that came out of this year’s expo was the strongest we have seen. The level of seriousness in the conversations, the seniority of many of the decision-makers we spoke with, and the specific, practical nature of the questions all suggest that organisations are ready to move rather than just explore.

We are grateful to every person who stopped at our stand, asked a hard question, shared their challenges honestly, or simply took the time to see what digital SHERQ management can look like when it is done properly.

See you in 2028

OVS Solutions has already signed our contract to return to Electra Mining Africa in 2028. We will be bringing the latest developments across the Rapid Global platform — including continued advances in AI, real-time monitoring, and integrated SHERQ management — and we will be building on the relationships and opportunities created at this year’s expo.

If you visited our stand at Electra Mining 2026 and want to continue the conversation, or if you missed the event and want to see what we demonstrated, contact OVS Solutions to arrange a demonstration.
