Securex South Africa is one of the continent’s most important gatherings for workplace safety, security, and compliance professionals. For OVS Solutions, exhibiting at Securex 2026 at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand was an opportunity to do something we don’t always get to do, have real, unscripted conversations with the people who manage health and safety on the ground every day.
Over the course of the event, those conversations kept returning to the same themes: the growing pressure of South African regulatory compliance, the limitations of manual systems, and the question of what good health and safety software actually looks like in practice.
This post summarises what we demonstrated, what we heard, and why those conversations matter for any South African business still managing safety and compliance processes manually.
What the Securex audience told us about the state of compliance in South Africa
The visitors to the OVS stand at Securex 2026 came from a wide range of industries, construction, mining, manufacturing, logistics, and facilities management. Despite the diversity of sectors, the challenges they described were remarkably consistent.
Most were managing contractor compliance through a combination of spreadsheets, email chains, and physical safety files. Most had experienced at least one instance of a contractor arriving on site with expired documentation. Many described the experience of preparing for an audit as stressful, time-consuming, and never quite complete.
What struck us most was how many of these conversations ended with the same question: “Is there a better way to manage this?” The answer, of course, is yes. But the more interesting question, the one that drove most of our demonstrations, was: what does “better” actually look like?
The businesses that visited our stand weren’t looking for more software. They were looking for a system that works, one that closes the compliance gaps they already know exist and doesn’t create new administrative overhead in the process.

For businesses managing high visitor volumes or rotating shift workers, this removes one of the most common sources of compliance gaps.
Access control and contractor compliance software integration
The integration between compliance status and physical access control was one of the most talked-about capabilities at our stand. When a contractor’s documentation lapses or an induction expires, the access control system is updated automatically. The result is that compliance is enforced at the gate without any manual intervention, removing the human error element that paper systems cannot eliminate.
The most powerful moment in any demonstration is showing a visitor what happens when a non-compliant contractor tries to enter site. The access is denied automatically. No manual checking. No pressure on gate staff. No risk of an uninducted worker slipping through during a busy morning rush.

One theme that came up repeatedly in our conversations at Securex was the gap between international safety software platforms and the specific requirements of South African businesses.
South Africa’s regulatory environment, the OHS Act (Act 85 of 1993), the Construction Regulations of 2014, the COID Act, and the Mine Health and Safety Act for mining operations, creates specific documentation, audit trail, and contractor management obligations that international platforms built for UK, Australian, or North American markets do not always address.

The conversations that stayed with us from Securex 2026
Beyond the product demonstrations, the most valuable part of Securex 2026 was the quality of the conversations. A few themes stood out.
- The growing cost of compliance failure: businesses are increasingly aware that the financial and reputational cost of a serious safety incident or failed audit far outweighs the cost of implementing proper digital systems
- The people problem: technology only works if people use it. Several visitors raised concerns about adoption, particularly on sites where workers are not comfortable with digital tools. The ease-of-use of the Rapid platform, and its mobile accessibility, addressed most of these concerns directly
- Multi-site visibility: for businesses managing more than one site, the lack of real-time visibility across operations was a consistent frustration. Seeing a single dashboard showing compliance status across all sites and all contractors in real time was consistently the most impactful moment in our demonstrations
- The audit question: almost everyone who has been through an unannounced regulatory inspection has a story about the stress of trying to produce documentation at short notice. Generating a complete, time-stamped audit report in under a minute was the capability that generated the most immediate interest
